Koral Luminaire
"Inspired by the beautiful Coral ecosystems in our oceans."
Problem
Everyday life in the middle of a land-locked state rarely involves marine ecology. Which can make one feel disconnected from a part of the world. Therefore this lamp is a reminder of the ocean and the magnificent creatures underwater and out of sight.
Concept
The Koral table lamp is for marine-life-lovers, kids, adults, or anyone that wants a piece of the ocean in their room. Being from the East Coast, the Ocean and Chesapeake Bay are very near and dear to my heart. I have cared about the health of the Chesapeake Bay for as long as I can remember, and overtime I have had to witness the water quality decline, see more and more bellied-up bass, and experience the consequences of over fishing. However, my love and concern for water does not stop at the Bay, in fact another marine topic that pulls on my heart strings is coral.
Thanks to global warming, the oceans temperatures are rising, which throws off marine ecosystems, forcing coral to die. As of 2003 three species of coral were declared endangered and mass coral bleaching events have been happening around the world since. The Great Barrier Reef is one example of massive coral bleaching where half the coral has died since 1995. Therefore the question is, where will the state of coral be thirty-five years from now? A momento of these beautiful animals is key for remembering whats important on this earth, clean water and healthy ecosystems.
